The American League edged the National League for its ninth consecutive victory in the 2022 All-Star game on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
In the first inning, the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts hit a single to center field to drive in Atlanta Braves right fielder Ronald Acuna Junior. St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt homered to put the NL ahead 2-0, Fox reported.
In the third inning, New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton swatted a massive 457-foot, 2-run homer to tie the game. The next batter, Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton, slammed a home run to give the AL the lead.
The rest of the game went scoreless.
In the ninth inning, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase sealed the victory for the American League, striking out the side and holding the National League scoreless.
The AL won the All-Star contest 3-2, outhitting the NL 8-5, with one AL error, ESPN reported.
Derek Jeter documentary debuts
The ESPN documentary series The Captain, which details the career of New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter, began on Monday night, MassLive reported. Jeter retired from major league baseball in 2014. He was named the Yankees captain in 2003 by former team owner George Steinbrenner following New York going through an eight-year period without one. The nickname stuck.
Jeter's No. 2 jersey was retired in 2017. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020, the first year of his eligibility and only one vote shy of becoming the second unanimous selection in HOF history. As part of the Yankees, Jeter helped New York win five World Series championships in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009 and was the World Series MVP in 2000, 24/7 Sports reports.
Jeter remains involved in major league baseball as a front office executive, serving as CEO and part owner of the Miami Marlins since September 2017.
MLB fans slam Conan Gray’s Home Run Derby national anthem
On Monday night at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Conan Gray, a 23-year-old YouTube singer-songwriter, was selected to sing the national anthem for the MLB Home Run Derby. Gray gave an attention-grabbing performance – but for all the wrong reasons, the New York Post reported. You can judge the performance for yourself here on YouTube.
Fans immediately took to social media slamming the lackluster and pitchy performance, declaring it in the "top 5 worst national anthems renditions" ever heard. One fan posted a photo of an NBA player with a bleeding ear. Several fans compared the performance to Fergie's flop at the 2018 All-Star game. Gray has become a popular TikTok sensation and reportedly has over 21 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
