Major League Baseball has suspended 12 players and coaches following the massive brawl that erupted during a game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners on Sunday in Anaheim.
Massive brawl between Angels and Mariners on Sunday
During a game in Anaheim on Sunday between the Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners, a massive, bench-clearing brawl erupted as tensions from a prior game on Saturday boiled over.
Both teams were warned prior to the game as frustrations were already high after a game on Saturday where Mariners pitcher Eric Swanson put a 95 mph fastball near the head of Angels center fielder Mike Trout during the ninth inning on Saturday night, ESPN reported.
During the first inning of Sunday's game, Los Angeles Angels opener Andrew Wantz threw a pitch behind the head of Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez. The pitch appeared to be a response to Swanson's pitch at Trout's head the previous night.
Then, on the first pitch of the second inning, Seattle Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker was intentionally hit by a pitch from Wantz.
Winker reacted by angrily yelling, then gesturing toward the Angels' dugout. Both benches and bullpens emptied as a result. A massive brawl erupted near the Angels' dugout on the third-base side, lasting nearly four minutes. Both teams appeared to throw multiple punches.
