NFL appeals Deshaun Watson 6-game suspension, seeking longer term

The NFL has informed the NFLPA that it will appeal the ruling by disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson to give Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson a six-game suspension, seeking a tougher penalty.

According to a number of sources, the NFL was seeking an indefinite suspension of at least one year for Watson for violating the league's personal conduct policy, CBSSports reported.

On Wednesday, the NFLPA was preparing to sue the NFL in federal court if it appealed Robinson's decision, ESPN reported.

The league said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will determine who will hear the appeal and he has the option to consider the appeal himself or appoint a designee to do so.

Cowboys sign former Vikings Pro Bowl LB Anthony Barr

The Cowboys have signed former Minnesota Vikings four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Anthony Barr to a one-year deal. Barr had reportedly received interest from the Washington commanders, and was deciding between Dallas and the Denver Broncos, CBSSports reported. Injuries have plagued Barr's availability over the last two seasons, but not too long ago was one of the top linebackers in the NFL.

Cardinals' Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown arrested for criminal speeding

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown was arrested and charged with criminal speeding in north Phoenix on Wednesday morning on State Route 101 after his vehicle exceeded 85 mph, according to Maricopa County records. Brown faces a fine of up to $500 and/or a one-year probation, and up to 30 days in jail. Brown is entering his fourth NFL season and his first with the Cardinals, CBSSports reported.

Lions Tracy Walker turned down higher contract offer to stay in Detroit

Detroit Lions safety Tracy Walker says at the end of the 2021 season, in free agency, he had a couple of unnamed NFL teams approach him with higher offers, Sports Illustrated reported.

"I definitely had more teams, I had more money, but at the end of the day, I know the situation might not have been the best for me," Walker said. "This was my best situation with everything that I was dealing with."

Walker, 27, signed a three-year, $25 million extension to stay with the Lions.

Legendary Alabama announcer Eli Gold to miss 2022 college football season due to health

Eli Gold has been the legendary radio voice of the Alabama Crimson Tide for over thirty years, but health issues will keep the veteran broadcaster out of the booth for at least the start of the 2022 college football season, Sports Illustrated reported. Chris Stewart will step in to fill in as necessary until the 68-year-old Gold can return, which a source says could be anywhere from weeks to months.
