Raiders make history hiring first black woman as team President, Baker Mayfield trade and Jimmy Garoppolo status, 49ers tackle Trent Williams gets coveted rating in Madden video game, Cowboys backlash, and more.
Las Vegas Raiders: Sandra Douglass Morgan becomes first black female team president in NFL history
Sandra Douglass Morgan has made two football firsts: She is the first black female president for the Las Vegas Raiders, as well as the first in the history of the National Football League.
Sandra Douglass Morgan adds those two firsts to a pair of others she has accomplished. A Las Vegas native, Sandra was the first Black city attorney in Nevada, when she served for the City of North Las Vegas, as well as the first person of color named chair of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, NPR reported. In addition, Sandra is an independent director at Allegiant Airlines, Caesars Entertainment, and Fidelity National Financial, Inc.
Baker Mayfield trade and Jimmy Garoppolo status
The Baker Mayfield trade is a done deal; he's now with the Panthers.
Jimmy Garoppolo is still with the 49ers, but it's apparent that Trey Lance is the future face of the quarterback franchise in San Francisco. With training camp just around the corner, there's speculation Garoppolo could be cut.
There are five destinations where he could land, CBS Sports reports:
1. Browns: With Watson expected to be suspended for 2022 and Mayfield off to the Panthers, Cleveland could be a suitable home for Garoppolo.
2. Bears: Although the team is focused on Justin Fields, it couldn't hurt to have a proven backup.
3. Texans: A lack of veteran insurance makes Garoppolo appealing.
4. Seahawks: If Garoppolo is cut, all one needs to remember is that he has led two teams to the NFC title game in three years. Enough said.
5. Patriots: They've already invested in Mac Jones, but if Garoppolo is cut and the price is right, at the very least, he could serve as a mentor to Jones.
49ers tackle Trent Williams is first offensive lineman to get coveted rating in Madden video game
EA Sports, the developer of the popular Madden video game franchise, has placed San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams in a coveted group within the game – the 99 club. It represents the highest rating a player can have in the game. What makes this such a big deal is that Williams is the first offensive lineman to ever receive a 99 rating.
In 2022, Williams' second season with the 49ers, he earned his ninth Pro Bowl nod and first-team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career, ESPN reported.
Cowboys backlash over association with black rifle coffee
In the wake of the mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, the Cowboys are receiving a backlash. It seems it's a matter of timing. One day after the deadly shooting, Dallas announced a partnership with beverage maker Black Rifle Coffee, a gun-themed company that is veteran-owned, CNBC reports. The criticism comes in part over some of the product names the company uses including: "Silencer Smooth Coffee Rounds," "AK-47 Espresso Blend," and "Murdered Out Coffee Roast."
Many online criticized the Cowboys with statements such as the organization is "on the wrong side of history" and pressing Dallas to "rescind this." However, others defended the Cowboys partnering with Black Rifle, stating that the company was veteran-owned and that people were getting upset over the name without knowing anything about the company.
Jerry Jones issued a statement saying the partnership represents both parties supporting the military and first responders.
