If you follow the NBA, even casually, there’s a good chance you know who Giannis Antetokounmpo is. The “Greek Freak,” as he’s known to fans, currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks and is considered to be one of the best players in the league. Though he’s just 26 years old, Antetokounmpo is already making a name for himself among the other great hoopers in the league, such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kawhi Leonard, and many others. While he’s yet to win an NBA Championship, the Greek native has already taken home the NBA’s MVP award.

He’s of Nigerian Descent
Though Antetokounmpo was born in Athens, Greece, he is of Nigerian descent. In fact, his parents, Veronica and Charles Antetokounmpo, immigrated to Greece in the early ‘90s. Despite being eligible to play for Nigeria, Antetokounmpo made the decision to represent Greece on the international level.
Served in the Army
Under Greek law, every male citizen has to serve at least nine months in the Hellenic Army. Antetokounmpo decided to complete his service during the summer of 2016, along with his brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo. The country actually allowed both men to serve reduced terms since they were permanently living abroad.
First Greek to Win the NBA MVP Award
While many international players play in the NBA, Antetokounmpo was the first Greek national to win the NBA MVP Award in 2019. Not to mention, he was also the first Greek player to be selected for an NBA All-Star Game, which he was picked for back in 2017.
Played Two Seasons in Greece
Prior to making the jump over to the NBA, Antetokounmpo played two seasons of professional basketball in Greece. He first started playing with Athenian club Filathlitikos in 2011 and during the 2012-2013 season he was averaging more than 12 points a game.
Caught a Ride to His Game From a Fan
During his rookie season, Antetokounmpo decided to wire money to his family prior to one of his games. The only problem? He didn’t leave any money for himself to catch a cab to the arena! In fact, a Bucks fan actually spotted Antetokounmpo running to the arena, so they stopped and offered him a ride.
Only Player to Win Both the Most Improved Player Award and Most Valuable Player Award
Antetokounmpo’s breakout season came in 2016 and 2017 when he was awarded the Most Improved Player Award. Then, just two years later, he managed to win the MVP Award. He is still the only player to ever win both awards during their career.
One in Five to Win MVP Award Early
Antetokounmpo won his MVP Award when he was just 24 years old. He is only one of five players to win the award at age 24 or younger. Derrick Rose won when he was 22, Moses Malone won when he was 23, LeBron James won at 24, and Michael Jordan won at 24.
