Verlander wins MLB-leading 15th game
Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings as the AL West-leading Houston Astros beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 Thursday night. The game saw him striking out five and only giving up two hits, both singles, Click2Houston reported. The win gives Verlander an MLB-leading 15th victory, with a record of 15-3. He also is now tied with Herb Pennock for 55th place all-time with 241 victories.
Verlander has made a comeback from the so-called Tommy John surgery, technically known as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction, which repairs a torn ligament inside the elbow, according to Hopkins Medicine.
Angels match MLB mark with 7 solo homers but still lose
The Los Angeles Angels tied an MBL record with seven solo home runs in a single game on Thursday--but they still managed to lose to Oakland. None of the seven homers came with anyone on base, the Washington Post reported.
Slamming home runs for the Angels were, in order: Ohtani (1st), Suzuki (2nd), Ward (3rd), Adell (4th), Walsh (6th), Ohtani (7th), Moniak (9th).
Ward struck out swinging in the bottom of the 9th, as the Athletics took the victory 8-7.
Miguel Cabrera uncertain of playing in 2023
Detroit Tigers designated hitter/first baseman/third baseman/ Miguel Cabrera, 39, says this could be his last MLB season. Earlier this year, Cabrera joined the 3,000-hit/500-homer club.
But Cabrera is currently in a slump, plagued by injuries--although he was hitting .308 as recently as July 8, ClickonDetroit reports.
"You've got to understand your body, I understand mine and my place on this team," Cabrera said. "I've got to talk to my agent, the GM, I've got to talk to everybody to see the plan for next year."
Regardless, Miguel Cabrera is a two-time American League Most Valuable Player award winner, a four-time AL batting champion, and a 12-time MLB All-Star. He is almost certainly headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Syndergaard makes debut win with Phillies
Phillies pitcher Noah Syndergaard walked away with a win in his debut performance with Philadelphia, allowing four earned runs on eleven hits and no walks, CBSSports reported.
